Charles Dickens was born on 7th February 1812 in Portsmouth, England. The second of eight children, Charles was a delicate, sensitive child, unable to play with other children and he spent the time reading books, such as "Robinson Crusoe" and "Don Quixote".
At the age of 12, his father, unable to pay his debts, and the rest of his family went to a prison in London and he had to earn his living washing bottles at Warren's Blacking Factory but, some years later, he became a reporter on the newspaper "True Sun".
Later, Charles began to write novels. He enjoyed travelling to many places:Scotland, America, France, Switzerland and Italy.
Charles Dickens suffered a stroke and he died at his house, on 9 June 1870 at the age of 58.
Two days after his death, Queen Victoria wrote in her Diary, "Charles Dickens is a very great loss. He had the strongest sympathy with the poorer classes." On 14 June, he was buried in the Poet's Corner, Westminster Abbey, close to the monuments of Chaucer and Shakespeare.
